Ecuador: Banana fear of "bankruptcy"

The president of the Association of Banana Exporters of Ecuador (AEBE), Eduardo Ledezma said that non-payment of the official banana price to farmers could generate product bankruptcy and loss for exporters.

The official price per box of fruit is USD 5.50. Ledezma said there are producers who are selling it at USD 2.00 and USD 3.00, thus damaging those who offered the price established by the Ministry of Agriculture.

"You can generate the collapse of the industry and give a terrible image of Ecuador and the Ecuadorian industry," said the AEBE representative.

Some 46 million 800 thousand boxes of fruit per year -60% of domestic export production - would not be shippable as a result of the possible closure of the airstrip. It would also lead to a suspension of phytosanitary processes against black sigatoka which could affect 30,000 hectares of the total 50,000 hectares in El Oro.
